Subaru is recalling around 200,000 vehicles in the US to fix a defect that could lead to corrosion of the brake lines, the Japanese carmaker said last week. The move followed an earlier recall for most of its models, which can start by themselves if their keys were dropped, and another recall of certain models whose “puddle lamps” can short-circuit.
The latest defect was discovered when Subaru was testing the impact of rust in vehicles being driven in states where salt is used to keep roads clear of ice and snow. It found that saltwater “could splash on the brake lines through a gap in the fuel tank protector, resulting in excessive corrosion of the brake lines,” parent company Fuji Heavy Industries said in a regulatory filing.
