GRAFT-CHARGED ECIJA MAYOR FLEES FROM POLICE

SCIENCE CITY OF MUÑOZ, Nueva Ecija: Mayor Efren Alvarez eluded both operatives of the National Bureau of Investigation-Cabanatuan City and local police who came to his house to arrest him. Alvarez is facing charges of graft and corruption over the award of a P240-million contract to a private company for the construction of a four-story shopping mall in a government lot. The company abandoned the project after demolishing old buildings and excavating portion of the project site. The warrant of arrest was issued against Alvarez by Sandiganbayan Fourth Division Chairman Gregory Ong. Lawyer Domiciano Felipe Laurena 4th filled the case against Alvarez in 2003, claiming that the contractor was not licensed and did not have the experience and financial qualification to undertake the project.
