THERE has been talk recently about a proposed index of regional currencies, which is now being referred to as the “Asian Currency Unit” (ACU) after the “European Economic Unit” (ECU), the precursor of the euro.
This development again brings to the limelight the idea of introducing a single Asian currency. Although a regional currency index is a long way off from a single regional currency, it can as easily raise a number of contentious issues.
