THE 28th Gawad Urian, the film critics’ awards, on Saturday turned out to be a night of victory for independent film makers even as it gave young actress Judy Ann Santos her first best actress trophy ever outside of a small film fest.

Panaghoy sa Suba and Ebolusyon ng Pamilyang Pilipino, both produced by fledgling companies, shared honors as best picture. Panaghoy also won for its director and lead actor, Cesar Mon¬tano, top honors in those categories, as well as best cinematography for Ely Cruz, best sound for Angie Reyes and Nestor Mutya, and best musical scoring for Nonong Buencamino.
