Kyoto supporters jubilant as Russia embraces pact

PARIS: Defenders of the Kyoto Protocol were overjoyed Thursday after the Russian cabinet agreed to submit the UN's climate change pact for ratification, a key move towards dispelling the dark clouds over its future.

The European Union (EU), which had fought a rearguard battle in 2001 to save Kyoto after the accord was ditched by the United States, said Moscow's approval was a 'huge success' in the fight against climate change.
