First mover: Smart and Globe may have lost it

WHEN we think of 'first mover,' some of us would immediately think of foot soldiers that go before anyone else to prepare the way for others. They're the so-called early settlers or pioneers, if you may.

But remember, this column is generally all about business management, and not designed for history and politics. Well, I'm actually referring to a strategic buzzword, introduced by Michael Porter to describe how a company gains competitive advantage by being first to introduce a new product or service in the market.
