Scrutinizing the antiviral components of ginger

Salabat (ginger tea) is an old Filipino remedy for cold and flu. With the swine flu pandemic now in full swing, there is a renewed interest in the capability of this herb to provide protection against the dreaded A(H1N1) virus.

Our grandmothers may have been right in saying that ginger (Zingiber officinale Rosc) can beat the common flu. A study led by Dr. Hiroshi Ochiai at the Department of Human Science, Faculty of Medicine, Toyama Medical and Pharmaceutical University, Japan revealed that ginger might indeed have potential clinical applications as a preventive and therapeutic agent for flu virus infection.
