SEN. Richard Gordon’s quest for the presidency is expected to
begin today at a convention of volunteers at the Manila Hotel. Some
1,500 delegates are expected to attend the grand launching and
national convention of the Bagumbayan Movement-Volunteers for a New
Philippines set to start at 8 a.m. The highlight of the convention
apparently would be the formal endorsement of Gordon as a candidate
for the highest post in the land in the 2010 elections.
Gordon was the first politician to announce his
availability for the presidency. He ran for senator in 2004 under
the administration-supported coalition but he refused to join either
Lakas or Kampi supposedly to maintain his independence. Gordon has
often derided what he called “transactional politics” being
pursued by the administration.
