Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye said he is leaving President Gloria
Arroyo’s official family next month “to fulfill a wish of going
back to banking.”
Bunye, however, will not be entirely out of
Malacañang. He said he will serve also as political adviser to
President Arroyo.
In his regular Sunday newspaper column, “View
from the Palace,” he announced that he is set to join the Monetary
Board, effective June 22.
Bunye added that his departure from President
Arroyo’s official family is “a matter which I have discussed
with the President since last year.”
He said his banking career was cut short by the
1986 “people-power” revolt that toppled President Ferdinand
Marcos. Shortly after the uprising, he was appointed Muntinlupa
Mayor by Corazon Aquino, Marcos’ successor.
“Before I accepted the post of OIC Mayor of
Muntinlupa shortly after the EDSA Revolution, I was Assistant Vice
President in the Bank of the Philippine Islands from 1983 to 1986,
doing corporate finance, and before that, I was Assistant Vice
President in the Ayala Investment and Development Corp. from 1980 to
1983, handling International Operations,” Bunye added.
Even if he is outside the Cabinet, he said he
will continue to serve the President in any capacity.
He also announced that in the interim he is
serving as Presidential Adviser on Political Affairs.
Bunye said he will announce the name of his
replacement soon.
