UE, UST dominate UAAP 
high school volleyball 


REIGNING boys’ champion University of the East swept all their first round assignments, while University of Santo Tomas completed a three-game sweep in the girls’ division in the UAAP juniors volleyball tournament over the weekend at the UE Gym.

The Redshirts waylaid the Tiger Cubs, 25-18, 25-20, 25-20, for a 4-0 slate, while the Tigresses topped defending girls’ champion Redskirts, 25-22, 13-25, 14-25, 25-20, 15-7, in the rematch of Season 69 finals.

La Salle-Zobel ended up in second behind UE in the boys’ standings with a 3-1 slate after posting a 29-27, 25-23, 25-20 win over Ateneo.

With two successive losses, the Blue Eaglets (2-2) placed third.

UST finished in fourth with a 1-3 slate, while the UP Integrated School are winless in four games.

The Junior Red Skirts took second spot with a 2-1 mark, while No. 3 Junior Lady Archers has a 1-2 record and the Junior Lady Maroons are winless in three starts.

Meanwhile, the Ateneo men’s and women’s teams top the charts in the football standings after first round action ended on Sunday at the Ateneo field.

Gino Tingson scored a 28th-minute goal as the Blue Booters edged the Red Warriors, 1-0, for a 4-0-1 (win-draw-loss) record for 12 points.

Ateneo and La Salle battled to a scoreless draw, but the Katipunan lady booters still ended up on top with a 2-2-0 win-draw-loss slate for a total of eight points.

In other men’s matches, UST and Far Eastern University settled their duel with a 2-2 standoff, while the game between La Salle and UP ended in a scoreless draw.

Reigning MVP Ruchelle Latap shot three goals, as the Lady Tamaraws whipped the Lady Maroons, 7-1, in the only other women’s match.

In baseball, Adamson nipped titleholder UST, 5-3; while University of the Philippines bamboozled Ateneo, 11-0, in seven innings on Sunday at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.

In the other match, National University downed La Salle, 10-5.

The Growling Tigers and the Fighting Maroons are now tied on top with 4-1 records, while the Bulldogs are in third with a 3-2 card.

With an even 2-2 slate, the Falcons are No. 4, while the Blue Eagles and Green Archers are at 1-4 and 0-4 records, respectively.
