A new fuel economy record was set on January 18 in
the Petron Xtra Mile Challenge Champions Edition when a car traveled
1,402.4 kilometers on one tank of Petron Xtra Unleaded.
From Bangui near Pagudpud in
Ilocos Norte, brothers Emilio Zayco and Emmanuel Zayco of Team Zayco
Hermanos drove to Matnog, Sorsogon, then turned around and finally
stopped in San Fernando, Camarines Sur. The Zaycos broke their
previous record by optimizing the fuel economy formulation of Petron
Xtra Unleaded and the continuously variable transmission technology
of the Honda Jazz.
Coming in at second place was The
Philippine Star team of Jeff Reyes and Lester Dizon, who logged
1,323.5 kilometers. In third place was the BusyBodies team of Roman
Floresca and Delfin Perez, assistant business editors of The
Philippine Star and Manila Bulletin, who traveled 1,318.3
kilometers.
Other competitors include Ron de
los Reyes and Ronald de los Reyes of AutoReview, who placed fourth
with 1,311.3 kilometers; Pocholo Ramirez and George Ramirez with
1,269.2 kilometers; Louis Ramirez and Sheila Ramirez with 1,267.3
kilometers; and Jess Garcia and Joseph Javier (DZRH-DZRB team) with
1,253.1 kilometers. Mike Asuncion and Grace Asuncion were unable to
finish because of a minor accident that damaged their engine.
All teams drove a Honda Jazz 1.3
with automatic transmission that’s sponsored by Honda Cars
Kalookan, Honda Cars Quezon City and Honda Cars Shaw. Supporting the
event were Hewlett-Packard, Certina Swiss Timepieces, SpeedLab, Top
Gear and Gadgets magazines. The results were verified by the
Automobile Association Phils. and the Car Awards Group Inc.
