Arce looms as Donaire’s next foe

Nonito Donaire

AFTER his impressive conquest of the junior featherweight class, Nonito Donaire Jr. might be pitted against the current World Boxing Organization bantamweight champion Jorge Arce.

Top Rank Promotion head Bob Arum said he is seriously considering the 32-year-old Mexican warrior Arce as Donaire’s next opponent. Arum explained though that Arce must weigh 122-pounds to challenge Donaire.

After thrashing Puerto Rican Wilfredo Vasquez Jr. on Sunday, Donaire (28-1 win-loss card with 18 knockouts) said that he would be staying at the 122-pound division for a while, “I’m definitely staying at 122 for awhile. There are things Robert [his trainer Robert Garcia] asked me to do that I couldn’t do so well, so we will go back to the drawing board,” Donaire said in an ESPN.com interview.

Arum also stressed that that they have to make sure that Donaire’s injured hand heal first before they make final arrangements for the fighter’s next bout, “Let’s see what happens with his hand first,” Arum told ESPN.com boxing writer Dan Rafael. “That will determine everything, but depending on the timing, we want him to face Arce next.”

Besides Arce (59-6-2 with 44 Kos), Arum is also considering Japanese World Boxing Council super bantamweight champion Toshiaki Nishioka, and Cuban boxer Guillermo Rigondeaux as Donaire’s next opponents.
