Bulilits take on high school life in new comedy series

THE end of the school year may just be a few weeks away, but for the students of Lamberto Uy Villarama University (LUV U), senior year is just about to begin.

Following the continued success of Goin’ Bulilit and Toda Max, ABS-CBN now introduces Luv U—a new comedy series that seeks to perk up those slow Sunday afternoons.

According to the show’s head writer Ricky Victoria, the concept of Luv U came about because they wanted to give the graduates of Goin’ Bulilit a chance to further showcase their acting talents.

“Nanghihinyang kasi kami sa talents nung mga bata, nahasa na sila ng husto because of Goin’; unfortunately, they couldn’t stay there anymore because they’ve grown up,” Victoria told The Manila Times in an interview. “Eventually they graduate and leave the show, and their careers become uncertain.”

A veteran of ABS-CBN sitcoms such as Goin’ Bulilit and Banana Split, Victoria said it was Direk Bobot (Edgar Mortiz) who decided to pitch in Luv U, so that the graduates of Goin’ will have something to look forward to, as well as to help them improve their acting.

Just like its precursor Ang TV in the 90s, Goin’ Bulilit has become a launching pad for many young stars including Kathryn Bernardo and Julia Montes.

Luv U features tweenstars Miles Ocampo, Angeli Gonzales, Kiray Celis, CJ Navato and Igi Flores, who are all “graduates” of Goin’ Bulilit. It also introduces Marco Gumabao.

Luv U is the story of three young girls Camille (Ocampo), Whitney (Celis) and April (Gonzales), who just transferred to Lamberto Uy Villarama University, to finish high school. On their first day at the new school, they catch the attention of JB (Gumabao), Boom (Navato) and Rocky (Flores). Despite the strict warning of their grandmother (Viado), Camille and her cousins continue to pursue the path to teen romance.

With all the courtships and attempts on the ever dreamy first kiss, the six teen students will learn a very valuable lesson in life: That you cannot get all straight A’s in love.

Victoria said each episode will have a specific theme that will be consistent with the main story arc. “The main story will be about the three couples and their budding romances, but at the same time we will also tackle the other aspects of high school life, like the problems of the youth, their beliefs, etc.—but it will be done in a more humorous way,” Victoria revealed.

Another unique aspect of the show will be its use of social networking sites such as Facebook. “A lot of teens today turn to Facebook to share their ideas and sometimes voice out their problems so we will be incorporating that in the show. Each of the characters in Luv U will have a Facebook account that viewers can add and interact with, to make the show more interactive,” Victoria added.

Ocampo said she is quite excited about the project and ready for her new role because she enjoys high school life. “The program will really make us laugh, but it will also teach a lot of lessons. Young people out there can really relate with this,” she added.

Ocampo then expressed her gratitude for Goin’ Bulilit, where she started doing comedy. “Direk Bobot Mortiz didn’t only train us to be good actors, he also instilled in us values that can be helpful in our careers,” she said.

Also in the cast are Bangs Garcia, Rhap Salazar, Alfred Labatos, Banjo and veteran comedians Joy Viado, Smokey Manaloto and Hyubs Azarcon.

Luv U premieres on February 19 after “ASAP Rocks” on ABS-CBN.
