THE Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) and Isuzu Motors Ltd. (IML) of Japan, with the assistance of Isuzu Phils. Corp. (IPC) and Plan Phils., recently held an “open-campus” event for the third batch of scholars set to graduate from the Isuzu-funded TESDA Auto-Mechanic Training Center in Tacloban, Leyte. According to IPC, the event presented the project to key people in the automotive industries and sought to find employment for the training center’s graduates.
Overseen by TESDA Regional Director Juan Sabulao Jr., the event was attended by representatives from various Isuzu dealerships, bus operators and those from companies and service shops in the area who require the services of qualified automotive technicians. IPC said graduates of the Isuzu-TESDA training center are issued NC4 certification, the highest for auto mechanics in the country.
“The students do not only receive training under the regular TESDA curriculum,” said IML Associate CSR Division Executive Kimihiko Sato. “Isuzu also provides technical support by sending instructors from Japan.”
Along with Sato, key people who attended the open campus event included TESDA Director General Joel Villanueva, Vice Governor Ma. Mimietta Bagulaya of Leyte, Councilor Cristina Romualdez of Tacloban City, IML Senior Executive Officer Ryo Sakata, IPC President Ryoji Yamazaki and Plan Phils. Country Director Diosdado Wana.
IPC said that besides demonstrating their wide range of automotive technical skills, the third batch of scholars also showed their non-technical skills such as how to properly and courteously handle customers. The activity was meant to show that the skills the students have learned have real-world application, according to the company.
“We would also like to get the feedbacks from employers who have kindly accepted our graduates It is our intention to continuously send out capable and quality graduates who can support the development of the Philippine automotive industry,” Sato said.
IPC said that to date, the TESDA training center has already accepted 129 scholars, 54 of whom have already graduated and have landed jobs.
