AFTER LED technology, laser light is the next logical step in car light development, according to BMW, which noted that it is already working at introducing such a system for series production within a few years. Laser is seen by the carmaker as safer and comfortable while at the same time significantly saving energy and fuel.
Its development of laser lights comes even as it is presently improving LED systems, BMW said as it cited that its 6 Series is fitted with a full LED headlamp that has new features like Anti-dazzle High-Beam Assistant and Dynamic Light Spot, which automatically illuminates pedestrians in advance.
BMW said that an advantage of laser lighting technology is its high efficiency; LED lighting generates only around 100 lumens per watt while laser makes 170 lumens. Safety is another key consideration for such a system, according to the carmaker. As laser’s originally bluish beam is turned into a pure white light, it becomes very bright but still pleasant to the eye. This means oncoming drivers and pedestrians don’t get dazzled.
The carmaker assured that laser light poses no possible risks to humans or animals as it is not emitted directly but instead is first converted into a form that’s suitable for use in road traffic. Also, lasers have been proven as safe as it is already used in a variety of consumer products.
