AMULUNG, Cagayan: In its efforts to help address climate change in the country, the Municipal Government is now bent on enforcing its Mahogany Tree Planting ordinance. Mayor Nicanor de Leon said the ordinance supports the greening program and requires all the government unit employees, barangay officials and residents of Amulung to plant at least one mahogany seedling every year. Classified as Critically Endangered (CR) in the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List 2007, De Leon added that the Philippine mahogany has become depleted due to logging and to slash-and-burn farming. The mayor added that a simultaneous community tree planting activity will kick off the implementation of the new ordinance.
