The Manila Times, media groups sign poll accord
THE Manila Times on Monday joined more than 50 other media groups and the academe in signing a memorandum of agreement (MoA) for "Eleksyon 2025." Times' President and COO Blanca Mercado was one of the signatories during the event held at the GMA-7 studio in Quezon City. "This partnership with GMA underscores the role of media towards comprehensive, accurate, timely and responsible news reporting," Mercado said. "It defines our shared commitment to

Net FDI down 14.5% in August
FOREIGN direct investments (FDI) remained positive in August but were markedly lower compared to a year ago, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) reported on Monday. At $813 million, the net FDI inflow fell by 14.5 percent from the year-earlier $951 million. "The decline in FDI net inflows during the month was due mainly to the 21.6-percent contraction in nonresidents' net investments in debt instruments to $529 million from $675 million," the BSP said in a statement. Reinvestments of earnings also declined by 9.4 percent to $217 million, from $240 million, but investments in equity

DTI's probe on cement imports to bolster local industry
THE Department of Trade and Industry's (DTI) probe into the rising influx of imported cement is a move seen as essential for strengthening the struggling local cement industry that has been facing increasing competition from imports. Local manufacturers have reported significant challenges due to the surge in cement importation, which has created an uneven playing field. In 2023 alone, the local sector has suffered losses amounting to P15 billion. Roberto Martin Javier, Cemex Philippines vice president for Commercial, expresses strong support for the DTI's actions, saying: "We
